Explanation
Correct answer: D.
Choice D is the best answer. “For instance” logically signals that the details in this sentence—that Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra and Colombian conductor Lina Gonzalez-Granados took new conducting positions—are examples supporting the previous claim about the new generation of artists.
Why the other choices are wrong
Choice A
Choice A is incorrect because “in addition” illogically signals that the details in this sentence about de la Parra and Gonzalez-Granados are merely additional facts related to the previous claim about the new generation of artists. Instead, they are examples supporting that claim.
Choice B
Choice B is incorrect because “lastly” illogically signals that the details in this sentence about de la Parra and Gonzalez-Granados are the last step or a concluding summary of the previous claim about the new generation of artists. Instead, they are examples supporting that claim.
Choice C
Choice C is incorrect because “granted” illogically signals that the details in this sentence about de la Parra and Gonzalez-Granados are exceptions to the previous claim about the new generation of artists. Instead, they are examples supporting that claim.

There are two parts for this passage. A statement that proposes that a new audience has been stepping up to the previously monocultured conductors of orchestras (where the previous conductors where mostly men). Therefore, as the second part of the text introduces people who are not from Europe being a conductor, its introducing an example of such rising audience. Therefore, we use: for instance. Sorry for these mental notes and my comment spam, it is the only way that I can organize my ideas and rigorously understand how to decosntruct the passages into more digestible parts.
