What does Boundaries test on the SAT?
Boundaries questions test how clauses, phrases, and sentences should be separated with punctuation. The key is identifying complete thoughts before deciding among commas, semicolons, colons, and dashes.
Common question types
- Join or separate independent clauses
- Punctuate introductory or nonessential information
- Use colons, semicolons, commas, or parentheses correctly
Common traps
- Joining two complete sentences with only a comma
- Separating a subject from its verb
- Using a colon before something that does not explain a complete clause
